In 1943/44, Joan Guss, a Speech Arts major, became the first woman to hold the office of student body president. A member of Delta Psi Omega, a national dramatics fraternity, she appeared in the 1944 campus production of Claudia, a very popular comedy based on the novels of Rose Franken (1895-1988).
